INTRODUCTION
The International Symposium for Chinese Medicinal Chemists (ISCMC) is sponsored by Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and Chinese Medicinal Chemists of Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Occident, held in every two years with the objectives to promote friendship and enhance communication and professional contact among practicing Medicinal Chemists in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas. The first ISCMC was held successfully during July 19~23, 1998, in Taipei, organized by the School of Pharmacy of Taiwan University. The School of Pharmacy of the West China University of Medical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Association of Sichuan, are honored to host the second ISCMC.
The Conference will begin with Registration on the morning of October 15,2000 and the Welcome Mixer on the same evening, and will end on the evening of October 18,2000.
The Scientific Program of the Conference will consist

of Oral and Poster Presentations. All parts of the Scientific Program will
be held in Jinjiang Hotel. We wish to extend our warmest welcome to Chinese
colleagues all over the world to attend the Conference and to contribute
papers on new findings in the field of Medicinal Chemistry and related
to Medicinal Chemistry. Graduate students in universities or institutes,
both from domestic and overseas are particularly encouraged to participate.
A substantial reduction in registration fees will be accorded to all bona
fide student participants.

Introduction
Giant Panda, a symbol of biodiversity conservation, peace and friendship, is the "national treasure" of China and beloved by people from all over the world. She distributes only in Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu provinces. The number of Giant Panda is no more than 1,000 in wild area, more than 80% of them live in Sichuan province. The Giant Panda is also nature’s gift to Sichuan province.
Chengdu Giant Panda Base-place, located in the northern suburb of Chengdu. Many endangered species such as Giant Panda, red panda, black-necked crane, white stork and swan etc are living in here. Ninety species of birds belonged to 29 sections also inhabit in the artificial ecology vegetation zone made with more than 300 species of species of plants belonged to 68 section. Located at the Base, Giant Panda Museum provides interesting educational information about a variety of species native to China. Many types of bamboo, trees, and flowers thrive at the Base. Several species of birds characterizing a fine spring day with fresh air, shadowy trees. The human-made structures have been designed to blend weel with the natural scenery, all kinds of rare endangered wildlife live and multiply leisurely in the base.
It is celebrated for unique virgin quietness and mystery under heave. The sparkling snow-covered peaks and dark green forests remind people of the remote North-European scenery. There are over 100 plateau lakes of various sizes in dozens of kilometers in length. The lakes, waterfalls and streams are magnificent, elegant, serene, extremely fascinating. Because of clear water and glittering stones at the bottom of the lakes, Spark Lake, Multi-colored Pool etc. refract sunlight so as to engender the dreamlike splendors. The visitors coming here doubt whether they have been into a fairyland. Pearl Beach is clear and smooth. On it numerous pellets of silvery beads twinkle. It has not only the grandeur of Huangguoshu Cataract, the grace of Dolongqiu, but also beautiful, natural elegant and bright charm.
3. Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Dujiangyan Irrigation System is a famous ancient irrigation works. The laboring people began to build Dujiangyan during the Warring States Period. Magistrate of a Prefecture Li Bing and his son went on with the building on the basis of the predecessors’ construction. The main part of Dujiangyan is a bifurcation project in the center of Mingjiang River where the bamboo crates filled with cobbles are stacked. The Mingjiang River playing havoc is separated into inner and outer ones which have two functions: flood discharge and irrigation. As a result the Mingjiang River turned harm into good. In the past 2000 years Dujiangyan irrigation works has nurtured the agricultural production of "the Land of Abundance". It is a rare example. Dujiangyan built by pilling up cobbles like jades is dressed in green , and clear waters flow forever and ever.
4.Mt. Emei
Mt. Emei is one of China’s four Buddhist shrines. The whole mountain is over 200 kilometers in length and breadth. Wanfodong , the highest peak of the mountain, is 3,098 meters above sea level. Beautiful and high-rising is all its variety. It has been described as a "beauty spot under heaven" by Chinese men of letters since ancient times.
The whole mountain has some dozens of temples on the basis of the mountain at the back which each has distinguishing features. There are many famous landscapes on the mountain, especially the "Four Wonders of Mt. Emei" on the golden summit—sunrise, sea of clouds, Buddha’s halo and Holy lamp and visible groups of monkeys are known far and wide. and attract numerous visitors at home and abroad.
5. Leshan Statue of Buddha
At the beginning of Tangxuanzong era ( 713 A.D.), a monk named Shi Haitong in Lingyun Temple enlisted money and recruited laborers to dig and construct the Statue of Buddha and wished it would bless locals from flood calamities. After ninety years, it was completed in the 19th year, Zhengyuan (803 A.D.).
The Statue is 71 meters in height. Its head is 14.7 meters high, 10 meters in diameter, and there are 1021 hair knits on it. Its shoulder is 28 meters wide while its foot back is 8.5 meters wide and 11 meters long. The mountain itself can be called a Buddha and none of other statues of Buddha can be its peers. It is solemn in shape and wonderful in design and it even has invisible drainage system which has made it undergo weather-beaten for over one thousand years, but still sit beside the torrential running water safe and steady to date. In recent years another huge Sleeping Figure of Buddha has been discovered in Leshan. The visitors all sigh with emotion the mystical, majestic and beautiful land which has made a lasting pleasant impression on them.
